Like The Hobbit? Check Out This Hobbit Theme Home

The Misty Mountain Shire Hobbit Homes

When I was young, engrossed in one of the novels of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, I used to wish that I could meet one of the hobbits, and I even imagined that they existed at one point in time. Oh, to see the beautiful, peaceful countryside of Bilbo’s Shire, to walk among the pleasant hobbits and visit their cozy hobbit holes! (I had a very active imagination, and J.R.R. Tolkein was very skilled at imagery).

Well, it seems as those my fantasies have actually been realized. In the tropics of Costa Rica, near the Arenal Volcanoes, a man named Walter and his wife build hobbit homes. Within 21/2 acres of land, Walter and Florence have established small hobbit- hole-suites complete with bedroom, bathroom, living, kitchen, and laundry rooms! The homes are built beneath earth, but include underground ventilation. Walter has created a YouTube video that showcases how grails are inserted in the floors of the holes to provide fresh air to the homes. In his video you can also see how amazingly spacious and comfortable the interior of the homes appear. Check it out:

On the Misty Mountain Shire, there is also a community center for housing guests if your hole is not large enough for all of your visitors. Walter says that if you want to stop by and watch the construction of your hole, you may also be accommodated within the Community Center.

Down the hill from the Community Center, there are also gardens, grazing livestock, natural vegetation, and a winding river to boot!

So the Shire does exist, just as I thought when I was young!
