How to Build A Shipping Container Home

Here are the tools and steps, you will need to take in order to create the perfect shipping container home!

First, make sure to finish any construction documents that are important for gaining a building permit. Submit your construction documents for pricing and working out the engineering of the shipping container. Once everything has been authorized, execute the purchase of your container.

Next is the fun part, building! First the foundation is laid. Foundation walls are back-filled, soil compacted, gravel added, and then the slab is poured. During the process of forming the foundation, the utilities are run to the base of the foundation and then to their respective locations.

Once the foundation has been laid, it may be time to modify your container. The roof, sides, and back of the container form a structural skin. Cutting holes or modifying the container can be harder than it seems. It is important to have the help of a structural engineer or architect while modifying your container to ensure accuracy and efficiency.

Now that the foundation has been laid along with modifying your container, it is time to secure the container to the foundation. Once they have been connected, it’s time to install windows, exterior doors, and any skylights. The next group of items that needs to be installed is the insulation, heating and cooling systems, plumbing, electrical, and any other fixtures.

Lastly, once you have complete construction there must be an inspection of the entire container by one of the contractors or building officials. Once the inspection has been passed, you will receive an official certificate of occupancy and will be ready to move in!
